SUMMERHILL TODAY

SUMMERHILL TODAY

After the disruption in the 50’s and 60’s, Summerhill has yet to recover from the massive construction efforts that splintered a thriving community.  The development of major highways and the Fulton County Stadium that drove out many families and local businesses is present now more than ever with the semi vacancy of Turner Field after the relocation of the Atlanta Braves to Cobb County.

The large section of empty parking lots and the aura of two abandoned stadiums seems to haunt over the rest of Summerhill as a reminder of the days construction began in the 1960’s.

There is a turn around however, as Summerhill appears to be changing with the thought of being an art and food district in mind.  This age of gentrification is bringing modern structures with symbolic street art to Summerhill, and attempt to change the feel of the area in an effort to bring people from other parts of Atlanta back to an area that has been abandoned. This crippled neighborhood is now changing its catch from one form of local tourism to another in a way that sadly only radiates the feeling of a lost community.
